Project Overview

The Matanuska-Susitna Borough is conducting the first comprehensive update of its zoning ordinance. The borough zoning code is being updated to make it easier to read and more efficient to use. Existing zoning code contained in MSB Title 17 is a compilation of many codes dating back to 1966.

Much has changed since that time including the number of borough residents. Our population has increased by over 75,000 since then and with that has come change. Another impetus for the update is the consistent comments from the last four borough-wide community surveys that indicated residents wanted better ways to manage growth and development.

While countless code amendments over nearly the last half century may have served to keep the regulations relevant, stacking amendment on top of amendment has created problems of its own. Even the simplest of text amendments has become complicated because of these changes; making it difficult to cross-reference interwoven sections and to prevent unintended consequences.
